We Visited the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park! From Gachapin & Mook to a Giant Turnip — The Fairy-Tale World Is Irresistible

If You Can Guess This From the Photo, You’re Quite the Expert!

Here’s a sudden quiz — can you tell where this place is?

Gachapin and Mook are waving here… and for some reason, a giant turnip appears too.

Gachapin and Mook are waving, see? And how about this one?

“Wait… a turnip?!” — I did a genuine double-take (laughs).

A Space Packed with the World of Fairy Tales

Look closely, and you’ll find the world of fairy tales spread out everywhere.

  • Snow White
  • Moon Viewing (Otsukimi)
  • The Three Little Pigs
  • The Crab and the Monkey (Sarukani Gassen)

Isn’t this unique worldview just wonderful? There’s a charm here that keeps drawing you back.

The Answer Is… the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park!

That’s right — this is the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park (Linear Railway Museum) in Nagoya! A must-visit destination for railway fans, where you can experience the history and future of the Shinkansen and maglev.

True to its name, the highlight you can’t miss is the maglev (Linear Motor Car) exhibit. The Mascots’ first reaction upon seeing the real thing? “Why is its nose so long?!” Indeed, that distinctive streamlined shape makes quite an impression the first time you see it. We found ourselves gazing at its futuristic form — so different from a regular Shinkansen. There’s also a corner where you can learn how the superconducting maglev works, and you’ll find the answer to “why the long nose” right there. We can’t wait for the day the maglev actually starts running!

The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park is a railway museum operated by JR Central. With an extensive collection of real superconducting maglev and historic Shinkansen vehicles, it’s a fun place to learn about railway history — and it’s easily accessible from central Nagoya.

One of Japan’s Largest! The Museum’s Incredible Diorama

Remember the Gachapin, Mook, giant turnip, and Snow White from the beginning of this article? Those are all part of the museum’s pride and joy — one of the largest railway dioramas in Japan.

Centered on the scenery along the Tokaido Shinkansen line, it precisely recreates a full day in Japan — from urban skyscrapers to rural rice fields and mountain hot-spring towns. What’s truly amazing is the lighting that shifts through morning, day, and night. When night falls, lights flicker on across the miniature towns, and the Shinkansen glides by with its headlights on — a sight so beautiful you can’t look away.

And if you look carefully, you’ll spot fairy-tale characters hidden throughout. Brimming with the creators’ playful spirit, this diorama is the most popular spot in the entire museum, often praised even by visitors who say, “I don’t know much about trains, but I loved it!” Searching for “Where’s Snow White?” together with your children is a delight too. 😊

Coming Soon — Doctor Yellow!?

And here’s some exciting news. Apparently, Doctor Yellow is also set to be displayed at the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park!

Doctor Yellow ended its regular service in 2024 and has long been beloved by railway fans as the legendary “happiness-bringing” Shinkansen — said to bring good luck to anyone who spots it. With the real vehicle going on display, this is something you simply can’t miss!

A Lineup of Historic Shinkansen — Plus Driving Simulators!

Another major highlight of the museum is the collection of real, historic Shinkansen vehicles. Famous models that defined their eras — the Series 0, Series 100, and Series 300 — are gathered all in one place, an awe-inspiring sight. You can feel the evolution of the Shinkansen up close.

Among them, the Series 151 and other limited express trains command a particularly striking presence. Their gleaming, polished bodies convey the very best of the railway technology of their time.

The driving simulators are also hugely popular. You can enjoy an authentic experience of being a Shinkansen or conventional-line driver — and adults and children alike get completely absorbed. Some require a numbered ticket, so it’s best to secure one as soon as you enter.
